How a pill forms
Repeated rubbing during wear or laundering can draw fibers out of the fabric and create fuzz. Continued friction tangles that fuzz into small balls. When fibers still anchored in the fabric hold those balls in place, they become the pills visible on the surface.
Woolmark identifies elbows, underarms, sleeves, the stomach area, and garment sides as common high-friction zones. Bag straps, desk edges, and the inside of outer layers can also create repeated contact.
Why the fiber name is not enough
ASTM's guidance for a pilling test notes that fiber or blend, fiber dimensions, yarn and fabric construction, finishing, and refurbishment can all affect pilling. Actual wear can also vary with conditions of use and the wearer.
A synthetic fiber does not guarantee severe pilling, and a 100-percent natural-fiber garment is not immune. A hairy surface, loosely held fibers, or an open construction may make fiber movement easier. A compact structure and stable surface may reduce the tendency, but the individual fabric still needs to be assessed.
Clues you can inspect before buying
Zoom in to see whether the surface is already fuzzy, long fibers stand proud of it, or the knit looks very open and loose. Those features do not automatically mean poor quality, but they are reasons to consider how much friction the garment will encounter.
A stated pilling-test result, fabric density, yarn specification, or finishing method can be more specific than fiber content alone. Check whether the seller also names the test method and rating scale.
Care that may slow it down
No routine can guarantee a pill-free garment. Start with the care label, turn knitwear inside out, wash it with similarly soft items, and limit contact with zippers or rough fabrics.
- Notice whether a bag strap or desk edge repeatedly rubs the same area.
- A mesh laundry bag may reduce contact with other items, but it does not override the care label.
- When the label permits, avoid aggressive agitation and high heat; dry flat when instructed to reduce distortion too.
- Lay the garment flat and remove existing pills gradually with a suitable comb or fabric shaver. Do not pull yarns or shave deeply into the fabric.
